The Poland Trust

The Poland Trust was created in the 1950s through a legacy from Sidney Poland, a very generous gentleman who lived in Brockham and supported the village in many ways. Our charitable aims are to help people in need and with a strong connection to Brockham (first priority) and then people in need with a strong connection to Betchworth, Buckland or Leigh. We do not go beyond these four parishes.

Initially we built six homes at Poland House in Kiln Lane. We now have eleven homes at Poland House (partly funded by a donation from another local family and by a grant from Betchworth United Charities), twelve homes at Poland Meadow and we recently added another fourteen homes when we took over Anthony West House next to the Church. At the start, we provided homes for older people but with the completion of Poland Meadow, we now offer accommodation to thirty seven individuals, couples and families of all ages who need our help and we are incredibly proud of these three special communities in Brockham.

As well as these homes, The Poland Trust also provides help and support to many other local individuals and organisations. Examples of this help include;

• Offering financial support for people who are struggling.

• Replacing washing machines or fridges for people who cannot afford to replace them when they break down.

• Helping to adapt homes for people who suffer life changing illnesses.

• Buying tools and equipment for youngsters starting apprenticeships.

• Supporting village sports clubs, the scouts and guides and buying equipment for The Shop at Strood Green..

• Providing the site for Brockham Bowls Club.

We also maintain the Poland Woods and the Old Orchard (by the Bowling Green Bridge) so that all members of our community can enjoy these special places.

Mr Poland’s original legacy allowed us to build the first homes at Poland House and to create an endowment fund to support our activities. Since then, we have benefited from other gifts of land, grants and donations to expand our charitable work in this community.
