Buckland Flagpole

In January 2025, a project was launched to install a glass fibre flagpole with a custom base that will allow the flagpole to be more easily maintained with the aim of being able to fly the Union flag to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day.

The local community is grateful to the Betchworth and Buckland Society for funding the purchase of our new flagpole, to the Buckland Estate Team who prepared the “perfectly sized” hole to accommodate the baseplate and to residents Alan Brindley and Martin Boyce who have since installed the base plate fixing and the flagpole.

Thanks to the effort of our local volunteers the Union flag was flying in time for Easter Sunday.

If you have your camera to hand when the sun is shining and a gentle breeze is allowing the flag to fly please try to capture the flag flying without any vehicles or people in the background and submit your photos of either the Union flag or St George’s flag to our webmaster to allow us to publish a gallery.

Buckland Flag Days

The Union Flag is the official flag of the United Kingdom – in Buckland, a Union flag is currently flown at Christmas, Easter and on the following occasions:

June – Official birthday of His Majesty The King (announced annually)
8th September – Accession Day of His Majesty The King
14th November – Birthday of His Majesty The King
Second Sunday in November – Remembrance Sunday

A St George’s flag is flown on 23rd April.

History of flag flying on Buckland Village Green

The original flagpole was donated by Paul Rietchel for the Queen’s 2002 Golden Jubilee Celebrations, and, as its installation was welcomed by residents, the flagpole was retained and Paul Rietchel took on the role of Volunteer Flag Warden. In May 2020, Alan Brindley, who lives within sight of the flagpole, took on the role of Volunteer Flag Warden.
